About
Us Our
grandfather was an accomplished amateur
golfer in the Greater Boston area. He
won numerous club championships in Needham,
Canton, and other area courses. On separate
occaisions JM and Dan were both able
to play a round of golf with Grandpa
Junior. Cousin Dan played with him
at the Samoset
Country Club in Rockland, Maine,
and JM played at Beaver
Meadow Golf Course in Concord, New
Hampshire. |
| We
have dedicated this trip to him,
and will bring home dirt from the hallowed
grounds of Augusta National to put on
his gravestone, next to dirt from St.
Andrews, that was placed there by his
eldest daughter, Aunt June (Cousin Dan’s
mom). |
 |
So who
are we?
Two 30-something (Cousin Dan is a lot
closer to 40 than 30) golf and sport
addicts. We both grew up in New England,
and cut our teeth on New England golf
courses. JM carries a 10.8 HC, and Dan
a misleadingly high 25. |
| Dan hangs his hat in Delaware,
whereas JM returned to his roots in
2000 and makes Newmarket, NH homebase.
Both enjoy a healthy diet of golf, RedSox
baseball, Texas hold em' and any fantasy
sports imagineable. JM is a member of
the Boston Tour, furthering his
career as a weekend golfer, while Dan
plays in a weekly league at Rancocas
Golf Club in Willingboro, NJ and plays
often at Patriots
Glen, in Elkton, MD. |
Planning:
Being Masters “virgins”
there was much planning to do. A ½
hour on the internet quickly made
us realize that although beers are
only $1.75 inside Augusta National,
lodging on the outside was pretty
pricey. After a week of research,
phone calls, and emails, Dan picked
up the phone to make a reservation.
As I was on the phone with the receptionist
at the Augusta Budget Inn at 400 Broad
Street (negotiating a ‘reasonable’
$150/night rate), I was simultaneously
opening an email from Cousin JM. The
email listed “gentlemen”
clubs in Augusta. What a coincidence,
the establishments are all on the
500 block of Broad Street. Good news.
“short walk”. Bad news,
my years of traveling throughout the
world have provided me with an understanding
of what type of neighborhood is usually
around such entertainment establishments.
We quickly reminded ourselves, all
hotel rooms look the same when you
are asleep. (Unless you have a shiv
sticking in your back!)
With the hotel in
hand we quickly made our flight and
car reservations. |

Important
Lodging Update!!
An anonymous
Augustan read our little web-site, and
has refused to let us stay at the Bludgeon
Inn. After finding an article in the
Augusta Chronicle describing murder,
prostituion and frequent robberies,
we now understand why the hotel should
never have been an option in the first
place. I mean, take a look at the photo.
This is on their 2006 direct mail piece.
They had no idea what we were talking
about when Dan asked for an electronic
brochure. Then they had to black-out
the .13 cent postmark on the 1957 postcard
they sent. Needless, we are going to
do a drive-by (ahem) and see what this
place looks like when we're down there.
Stay tuned, we'll post a before/after
shot - 1957-2006. Should be interesting.
Anyway,
as we were saying; an anonymous native
Augustan has arranged lodging for
us at an undisclosed, SAFE, private
home. We are quite thankful and look
forward to living through the Masters....we
were wondering how we would have carried
our clubs and laptop everywhere we
went!
Big Props to our
“Lodging Angel”...... |
